Intestinal Absorption Map: How Your Intestines Absorb Nutrients

Again today I heard from another client whose physicians wanted to remove a section of their bowels in hopes this move would clear up their gut distress. My advice is always to hold on to all of your insides!Nutrient absorption sites in bowels

Every piece of the human body has a specific function and reason for being there in the first place, and if you remove it you may or may not find lasting relief. You may instead find yourself in a whole new nightmare.

Gastro-intestinal surgeons blithely perform colonectomies and bowl re-sections and then may send the patient home without any advice that their redesigned bowels will not be functioning like a normal, healthy person’s bowels should. These patients are often not adequately counseled in regards to moving forward with their diet in light of their altered digestion and nutritional needs.

In short, one section of your intestines is not necessarily just like any other. Check out this map of intestinal absorption sites to see how the nutritional receptors differ by location in the digestive system.

Losing a piece of intestine as a solution for IBS, Crohn’s Disease, or other mysterious abdominal problems should always be a  last resort. There are other solutions for IBS to try before allowing yourself to be eviscerated.

Do You Have IBS?

The term Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS, gets tossed around so frequently that I find many who think it means something profound about their condition.

I hate to break it to you, but a diagnosis of IBS doesn’t mean much in the medical world.

For starters, anything that is called a “syndrome” is by definitiona group of signs and symptoms that occur together and characterize a particular abnormality”. If the signs and symptoms don’t appear to be related to a clear cause, a condition is called a “syndrome” rather than a “disease”. The signs and symptoms of IBS could include cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea and constipation.

So, when you receive a diagnosis of IBS from a doctor, what he or she is really telling you is that they simply don’t know what is causing you to experience these signs and symptoms, but they’re going to group them together and call them “IBS”.

In my humble opinion, IBS is a cop-out diagnosis that does not identify the cause of the IBS symptoms in the first place. If you don’t know the cause of the distress, then how can you heal the body so that the symptoms disappear?

A few common causes of IBS symptoms:

Food and chemical sensitivities. We accept that there are people who are lactose intolerant or allergic to wheat, but did you know that you yourself may be sensitive to such seemingly harmless foods such as broccoli, chicken, rice, or honey? IBS symptoms may appear up to four days after you’ve eaten a food, which can make identifying the culprits difficult to impossible. MRT food sensitivity testing and following a LEAP diet is a fast and easy method of finding relief from IBS symptoms.

Parasites. You can be infected by parasites during foreign travel, camping, swimming in lakes or rivers, or simply from eating sushi or drinking water. At one point the city of Milwaukee was infected with cryptosporidium through the municipal water supply. Luckily, a good herbal parasite cleanse can get rid of most of these buggers and then your bowels will be happy again.

Bacterial imbalance. A course of antibiotics can destroy your natural gut biome and replenishing the good bacteria will help your digestion. The trick can be finding the right pro-biotic supplement for your body.

Digestive enzyme deficiencies. Chronic inflammation can lead to a desensitization of the villi whose job it is to analyze the contents of your stomach and call for the correct formula of digestive enzymes to break it down. The intestinal lining cannot absorb nutrients from food that is not broken down enough by the stomach. An enzyme urinalysis can pinpoint exactly what’s being digested or not in your bowels, and then you can supplement accordingly with the right plant-based digestive enzymes.

Natural Solution for Seasonal Allergies

It’s all over the news that spring allergy season has kicked off early across the country.

Honestly, I hadn’t noticed.

The hay fever that plagued me every spring and fall since childhood – the constantly dripping nose, itchy eyes and palate, and foggy brain– didn’t come this year. Or last year, or for several years now, come to think of it. I know I’m happily symptom-free right now because I found what I fondly call my miracle homeopathic hay fever remedy.

While it was obvious from the very first dose that this remedy would alleviate my symptoms within ten minutes after placing a few drops underneath my tongue, what I didn’t realize would happen would be the eventual eradication of my allergies to airborne pollen. But after using the remedy a few times a season for a few seasons, that seems to be what has happened.

Who’d have thought it would be possible to be free from seasonal allergies without pharmaceutical help?

This morning I noticed that one of my trees was budding. Flowering trees season used to be the worst time for me. Now, I can look at the buds on my trees and look forward to their beauty.

If you suffer from hay fever and are open to trying something new that doesn’t have undesired side effects, order a hay fever remedy for yourself and see if it works for you. What have you got to lose?

Hidden Places Where GMOs Lurk

Here are a few places where you might not think you’d find Genetically Modified ingredients, so be aware.

Breakfast cereals. Almost all of the corn and soy crops in the USA are now GMOs; unless your cereal sports the Non-GMO Project or Certified Organic seals, be certain that, by default, they contain GMO corn or soy.

Soda pop. If it contains high fructose corn syrup, you can bet it’s full of concentrated modified/mutated DNA. I’m pretty sure that there is not a GMO-free version of high fructose corn syrup, but let me know if I’m mistaken.

Chewing gum. If it contains Aspartame, it contains GMOs. Same goes for Diet sodas.

Chicken. Yep, those chicken nuggets, chicken fajitas, chicken sandwiches, chicken burritos… Even that plain grilled chicken breast on rice served at the luncheon and that roasted half-breast-and-leg portion offered at some fancy restaurants. All of that comes from chickens fed a feed made up of corn and soy. Yep, you guessed, it: unless it’s specifically labeled as Organic of GMO-free, it’s most assuredly chock-full of GMOs. So the chickens eat the feed and now they incorporate the GMOs into their flesh.

Eggs. See above. Always choose organic eggs.

Beef. Cows, too, are fed a feed made of GMO corn and GMO soy. The mutated DNA remains in the meat of the animal, which means that your hamburger is likely brimming with tinkered DNA.

Milk. See above. Studies have shown that GMOs pass into the flesh, milk, and eggs of animals fed GMO-contaminated feed. This goes for non-organic yogurts, too.

Cleansing your nasal passages regularly should be a basic part of everyone’s health maintenance routine. While I’m a fan of the pre-measured mixing packets and delivery system from NeilMed Sinus Rinse, here is a do-it-yourself recipe for homemade sinus rinse.
