Water in the Morning

Welcome to my Effortless Eating Weight Loss plan! As promised, every Monday I’ll post another effortless weight loss strategy that can help you on your way to losing weight.

Personally, I believe that many people struggle with their weight because they look at life and eating as an all-or-nothing deal. Either you’re “on” a diet and follow strict rules regarding rations, portions, and ingredients, or you’re not and you feel free to put anything you see into your mouth. I blame this mindset on our “win-or-lose”, “dead-or-alive” society. It convinces us that if we “fall off” our “diet”, we might as well give up. Right?

Sigh.

But really. Life is all about those shades of gray in between winning and losing. It’s the give and take that’s crucial. The small concessions. The little choices we make and the ripples felt from the effects.

That’s why I don’t like to focus on “losing weight.” Rather, let’s focus on getting healthy, on giving our bodies what they need to function effectively and efficiently. Once we do that, the weight will sort itself out as a natural byproduct. The body seeks an equilibrium: our job is to give it the right ingredients to enable it to so healthily.

Why am I qualified to talk about this? Yes, I’m a Certified Nutritional Consultant, so I know about holistic nutrition and healthy bodies. And I’m an MS sufferer, so I’m concerned with having as healthy body as possible. But I’ve also lost 30-50 lbs. at four different times in my life! So I know what it is like to struggle with weight loss and feel out of touch with my body.

Most of the time, I feel pretty comfortable with my weight and my body. I’m not a 5’10” model in a size 2 body, and if that were my goal I would surely feel devastated most of the time! Nope. I’m 5’3″ and pretty sure my growing days are loliz-fat-front.jpgng gone. When I follow my own advice, I don’t have to think about what I eat or how much and my body sticks around at a size 4 or 6. Yet, even I don’t have full control all the time. Here is a photo of me after my last pregnancy and second c-section (I can’t believe I’m going to post this, but in the interest of full disclosure, here goes…).

liz-thinner.JPGNow I look like this. I feel strong and healthy, capable and powerful. And back down to my desired body size.

So, let me start by sharing my first weight loss/healthy living tip: a drink of water. Start each day with 12-16 oz. of water, chugged or gulped as quickly as possible first thing in the morning (before coffee or anything else!). This will act like a fire hose racing through your intestines and clearing out any debris. Be prepared to hit a bathroom soon afterward, especially as it becomes a routine and your body knows to expect it.

Constipation issues? This will help! The action of drinking the water early and quickly becomes more effective the more often it is practiced, so the first day you might not see an immediate effect, but by the tenth day you certainly will. This will also give you a head start on hydrating yourself for the day, so even if you don’t drink another sip all day, at least you will have gotten some water in already.

Try to drink filtered water, but if all you’ve got is tap water, then use that. We’ll talk more about water in another discussion.

Tell me: does this seem difficult? Overwhelming? Doable?

Baby steps to a healthy life and weight.

Next tip to come next week on Monday!

A new year, a fresh start

In many ways, I’ve always believed New Years to be an overrated holiday. The expectations are so high — the plans, the party, the new year’s kiss — that invariably someone feels let down. Or hung over.

And then there are the reflections on the past year, the evaluation of how you have or haven’t made your goals set last January, and the new dramatic resolutions, destined for most people to be a distant memory by February.

For years I simply didn’t make “new year’s resolutions,” just to avoid the self-recrimination when I didn’t live up to them. Now, I realize that I was going about it all wrong. Instead of resolving to change my life in a major way, one which would require a lot of effort, constant monitoring, and strict discipline, I could set smaller goals of things that I could practice every day: to be a nicer person to strangers and friends, to smile more frequently, to have healthier habits. To subtly shape myself into the person I wanted to be.

The funny thing was, these small lifestyle/outlook changes would have effects that would reverberate through my life in other ways. I would have more friends and be happier. I would lose weight without really trying. I would have less stress. I would find interesting things to learn about and feel intellectually stimulated. I would feel better, healthier, happier.

So, in this spirit, starting on the first Monday in January (that would be next week), I will be sharing specific strategies I’ve found to help you live a healthier life. Just little baby steps that translate into small lifestyle/outlook choices. Nothing drastic, I promise you.

If losing weight is one of your goals, you won’t want to miss the posts on Mondays, which will contain detailed, doable, weekly weight loss strategies provided in small, manageable, bite-sized bits of information. No diet fads, counting calories or unrealistic promises: just slow, steady progress toward your body’s natural equilibrium.

Days other than Mondays I’ll continue to talk about the other elements of living a natural lifestyle, as I have been so far.

2008 is off to a great start — stick around and we’ll enjoy it together! Happy new year to all!

Dad’s cough suppressant

My father the neurologist has prepared this never-fail cough suppressant for us ever since I can remember. It works better than any over-the-counter medication and doesn’t have the nasty side-effects associated with them, or the dangers of overdosing seen with children’s cough medicines. Take it before bed to suppress the cough and allow for sleep.

It couldn’t be easier:

1 shot of whiskey or other hard alcohol (rum works well, too)
1 Tbsp. honey (preferably locally collected, but hey, use what you’ve got)!
juice from 1/2 lemon or a few squirts from lemon juice concentrate

The alcohol warms the throat going down and loosens the mucous, but I’ve also made this with hot tea instead for a non-alcoholic alternative for the little ones. Try cammomile, Sleepytime or whatever non-caffeinated type you prefer, since the goal is to bring sleep.

The honey coats and soothes the throat, calming coughs. You may remember that I also like to use Honey Loquat syrup for this purpose, but more people have honey stashed in their cupboards and it works, too. Of course, this remedy can be made with Honey Loquat, too.

My mother made this remedy the other night using lemoncello alcohol and slept like a baby instead of coughing all night, as she had the night before.

I don’t like to prepare this remedy during the daytime as the body is trying to expel the virus with coughing and clear out the lungs, so it is best not to slow that process down.

For an added health benefit, combine this remedy with garlic tea!

A Busy Cook’s Guide to Spices

busycooksguide.jpgThis is one of my favorite reference books to have around: A Busy Cook’s Guide to Spices: How to Introduce New Flavors to Everyday Meals. Meticulously researched and invaluable when you’re looking to make substitutions or find a specific flavor, it makes a great addition to any foodie’s kitchen!

Weleda Baby Care

I love to put together a basket of my favorite things for new parents. I burn mixed cds of fun and relaxing kids music (yes, I was one of those people in college who loved to make mixed cassette tapes for friends! It’s just so much easier with iTunes now.), toss in some organic baby shampoo, and load it with my favorite products for the sensitive baby bottom: Weleda Diaper Care and Weleda Calendula creme.

Your skin is your largest organ and a baby’s skin is fresh and new, so the last thing I want to do is clog it up with petroleum-based products that interfere with cellular respiration. I can’t stand traditional diaper cremes (like Desitin) that are full of artificial, pore-clogging ingredients. Dr. Mercola, one of the nation’s leading natural health authorities, talks about the dangers of using petroleum-based skin care products on your baby here.

calendulababycream.jpgWeleda is an Australian company and I love their products. Calendula is a soothing herb for skin inflammation, and I found the Waleda Calendula cream to be a miracle product for making red, sensitive bottoms feel better. I also use it on bug bites, itchy scabs, raw upper lips from runny noses, and other skin irritations with unbroken skin.

weledadiapercare.jpgWhen a physical barrier against wetness is needed to stop or prevent diaper rash, I reached for the Weleda Diaper Care ointment. Sometimes, I used the Calendula cream first, then the Diaper Care ointment on top of that, for super healing and protection for those little bottoms.

I find Weleda products at Whole Foods or any other natural grocery store. Online, you can find them at drugstore.com. Everyone I have turned on to these non-petroleum options has loved them. 🙂
