One-Year Old Happy Meal

My friend Nonna Joann Bruso is getting a lot of attention for her 1-year old Happy Meal from McDonald’s.

A year ago she purchased a Happy Meal and set it on the shelf in her office. Last week, she pulled it back out and snapped a photo of the meal that looks almost identical to the one taken when it was fresh and savory-smelling.

She was amazed that this “food” sat on a shelf for a year and didn’t attract mice or ants. It seems to have dehydrated more than decomposed.

It kinda makes you wonder what kinds of preservatives you need to add to make food not decompose, doesn’t it? Can you help but wonder what happens to your body when it absorbs those kinds of preservatives?

Embalmed from the inside out. Now there’s a disgusting thought.

Revitalize Your Skin with Moondance Botanicals

Someone recently posted a question on a local mom’s forum I follow asking for recommendations for natural products. She was wanting to switch over to natural versions for her skincare routine.

It can be overwhelming to do such a major overhaul of all the products in your life, but one line that I can recommend without hesitation is Moondance Botanicals.

They make all of their products by hand in small batches using pure ingredients. Drop by their little shop on 6th Avenue in Denver and you might find them bottling or labeling behind the counter.

Their Citrus C Vitamin C Facial Cleanser leaves your skin squeaky clean without drying it out or leaving an annoying residue. As I once told my mother-in-law, soap technology has come a long way since Lucille Ball was an Ivory Girl, and if you’re still using old-style cleansers your skin will thank you for switching.

I also really like the Sacred Oils Face Serum, a mixture of a number of essential oils that leaves my skin glowing and youthful. I’ve found it to be a soothing after-waxing salve, since my skin will often hive for days after cosmetic treatments like facials, waxing, etc. I’ll frequently use the Serum as a nighttime moisturizer since it does such a great job.

I’ll admit that the serum can be too oily to put on right before applying makeup, particularly if you’re using mineral makeup, but otherwise, I love how it makes my skin feel so soft.

Healthy Sports Drink and Electrolyte Replacement

Sometimes, you just need to replace your electrolytes.

A series of hard workouts, excessive sweating, headache, bad breath, fever, vomiting, diarrhea,… any of these can be  signs that you should take steps to prevent dehydration, replace your electrolytes, and help your body recover more quickly and regain its interstitial fluid balance.

That’s why sports drinks and electrolyte replacement therapies can be a great speedy solution. Unfortunately, I have a lot of issues with regular “sports drinks.”

When I read the labels I see some great electrolytes like magnesium, potassium, calcium, and sodium, but I also find artificial sugars like Aspartame, Sucralose, and High Fructose Corn Syrup; artificial dyes (show me where florescent orange appears in nature!); caffeine; and “natural flavors” (Remember the frightening list of ingredients that make up “natural flavors”?).

It’s harder to find a clean, acceptable sports drink/electrolyte replacement than you might think. I challenge you to start reading the labels.

One that I like is Owater and their line of All Natural Electrolyte Drinks.

I think electrolytes by themselves must taste awful, because even Owater needs a sweetener. I’m happy to report that they use only pure cane sugar, and 35% less sugar than typical sports drinks. Without any artificial flavors or colors, Owaters are clear like the purified/distilled water they start with.

I prefer Owater to standard pediatric electrolyte replacement therapies like Pedialyte for the same reasons.

My kids like the Black Raspberry flavor, whereas I prefer Coconut. Find your own favorite!

For Immediate Release: DENVER, CO – The Colorado chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society has invited Elizabeth Yarnell to host the “Land of Nutrition” at this year’s MS Walk on Sunday, May 1, in the MS Wellness Experience Tent located in the grassy meadow just south of the Denver Zoo, and west of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

Cancer Survival Rates Increase With A Healthy Diet

The L.A. Times reported that “a new study has found that a diet high in fruits, vegetables and healthful grains may be associated with higher ovarian cancer survival rates.”

Huh. Ya’ think?

And do you think that the finding that “eating more fruits and vegetables and healthful grains was associated with a longer survival time,” could cross over and be a truthful statement for just about any cancer patient?

I say: YES!

I’ll even go out on a limb here and take it one step further: I’ll bet you’ll find longer survival rates in general – and better quality of life –among the population that practices a healthy diet, whether or not they already have found a cancer or not.

Yes, Yes, Yes!

I love it when clinical studies prove what we know to be universal truths: People who eat a healthier, whole foods-based diet fall ill less frequently, heal and recover faster when they do, and generally feel better on a daily basis than those who live off of processed “foodstuffs.”

It’s even more important for cancer survivors and others with compromised bodies – like those of us with MS– to focus mostly on a plant-based, high antioxident diet to encourage healing and healthy cell growth and function

So, thanks, University of Illinois at Chicago, for proving what mom always said!
