Could a Hidden Infection Be Affecting Your Mental Health?

Fascinating research on PANS and PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) suggests that hidden infection plays a role in many mental health issues.
So far, the research has focused on bacterial streptocauccus infection, with treatment being longterm antibiotics. This approach brings its own side effect to the body’s immune system, digestive system, and microbiome and can inhibit long-term health and vitality.
Not to mention breeding antibiotic resistance that could spread to the rest of the population.
But I wonder about parasites, too. Maybe the foreign invaders that the white blood cells see in a PANS patient are strep bacteria, as some doctors have suggested… or maybe they are a virus or parasite that we just haven’t looked hard enough to find yet?
According to the article, “The clearest and most common characteristic was rapid onset: A kid could be himself one day and a stranger the next. “
One day everything is normal, and then we get infected by something and everything changes almost overnight. This is a clear indication of a new infection in the body!
Regardless of the type of foreign invader, the immune system will respond with inflammation triggered by the release of inflammatory mediators. The most famous mediator we all know is histamine, but there are eighty or more types of mediators that the white blood cells can release once they deem there is a threat to the body. It doesn’t really matter which mediators are released because they all cause inflammation.
Mediators travel everywhere the blood does, meaning that inflammation is systemic. When we are inflamed, our brain is also inflamed. Inflammation can make it difficult to think clearly, to make good decisions, to be happy. When our brain is inflamed we are moody and mean; we feel our most basic emotions of anger, guilt, sadness, fear, despair.
When our immunesystem triggers inflammation, symptoms may include mental health issues of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety and panic attacks, psychosis, mania, bipolar, and more.
However, I believe there is a better way to free yourself from the hidden infestation that is at the root of your mental health than the toxicity of long-term antibiotics. You may have noticed that I went dark for a while at the end of 2020. In fact, there was even a month or so where my whole website was down and inaccessible, something that hadn’t happened since I first launched a website at ElizabethYarnell.com in 1993!

The dumpster-fire that was 2020 upended so many things in all of our lives, and mine was no exception. While COVID didn’t steal any of my loved ones (my heart and sympathies go out to those of you who faced such losses last year!), the economic uncertainty it brought, along with other factors, meant that I needed to pull back and restructure everything from what I do to what I call myself.

The good news is that my retreat from the web has brought me clarity in my mission and purpose, and gave me the space to pivot my enterprise in a way that will let me touch and help many more people along their journey to feeling better! If you’ve skipped out on working directly with me to improve your health in the past because it was unaffordable, be sure to read on for new opportunities that are coming.

When I took my web identity down and stepped back from social media, it gave me a chance to evaluate what I had been doing and to ponder what it is that I love to do.

As a board-certified traditional naturopath (not a “naturopathic doctor”), I love sharing information on new ideas that could change lives by improving health. Sometimes this is research, sometimes it’s recipes, sometimes it’s a regimen or a product. Sometimes it’s an opportunity to learn more about something I may have personally found to be healing. My web site and blog posts (almost one thousand posts since 2008!) will continue to be full of all of this kind of great information and accessible to subscribers and anyone on the internet.

My period of introspection affirmed and deepened my commitment to empowering people to take control over their own health, and thereby their future. Pandemic Thanksgiving Dinner Solution

Here we are, in a time unlike any other, facing a vastly different Thanksgiving celebration than usual.

My own family’s traditional turkey-day feast typically ranges between 16 and 48 guests. My mother always used to host, but I’ve taken over the duty in the last few years. It’s always a tremendous potluck gathering of my multi-faceted family, full of steps- and halfs-, ex’s and friends and significant others, aunts, uncles and cousins. Not to forget the grandparents and grandchildren. And even, for a few years in the 90s, a cousin-in-law’s parents and his siblings and their families.

In my family, this is the holiday everyone flies in for.

But not this year.

This year we are doing our part to curb the pandemic by staying home and not mingling with other family pods.

And, quite honestly, I can’t see myself cooking up a whole traditional Thanksgiving spread for just the four of us.

Luckily, I designed the “Holiday in One Pot” Glorious One-Pot Meal recipe just for times like these! This is the solution for when you’re not hosting a multitude for Thanksgiving but still want to enjoy the traditional meal.

As with every Glorious One-Pot Meal recipe, this one is designed to feed two people, so simply double or triple the ingredients to feed a larger group.

If you can’t find turkey tenderloins, turkey burgers can be an easy swap without compromising the flavor profile of the meal.
