Chasing Ice: Documenting climate change.

Earlier this week, my son and I attended an IMAX screening of the documentary “Chasing  Ice” at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science followed by a Q&A session with James Balog, the acclaimed National Geographic photographer and the man behind the Extreme Ice Survey (EIS). The EIS uses time-lapse photography to document the movement of glaciers on this planet.

Let me tell you: the documentation is mind-blowing. In a few short years, sped up through time-lapse photography, we watch glaciers receding a dozen miles and deflating enough to expose new vistas. It’s all there, climate change before our eyes, in artistically stunning photographic reality.

Exalted at the Sundance Film Festival and others, a Best Song nomination bringing it 50 seconds of video at the Oscars, and the subject of several TED talks, Chasing Ice will be coming to the National Geographic channel, Netflix, and other venues soon. Watch for it.

How Climate Change is Destroying the American West

Think climate change won’t affect us in our lifetime? Think again.

  1. In 1910 there were 150 glaciers at Glacier National Park; now there are 25.
  2. Glacier National Park will have no more glaciers within ten years.
  3. Southern California is home to 23 million people, all of whom are dependent on the Colorado River for the majority of their water needs.
  4. Due to decreasing mountain snow melt in areas like Glacier National Park, the Colorado River, the primary water supply for seven states, will be unable to meet demands within FOUR YEARS.
  5. An April Gallup Poll found that only one in three Americans are worried about Climate Change.

It’s coming faster than you think. Read the whole article on climate change in the west from the Organic Consumers Association.

These are a series of photographs of the Grinnell Glacier taken from the summit of Mount Gould in Glacier National Park, Montana, in 1938, 1981, 1998, and 2006 (from left to right). In 1938 the Grinnell Glacier filled the entire area at the bottom of the image. By 2006 it had largely disappeared from this view.

Those of us who live in the states crossed by the Colorado River should be especially concerned about water conservation, and it rankles me every time I learn about a new golf course planted in this arid environment. Don’t even get me started about how the sight of vast expanses of water-hungry Kentucky bluegrass in a high mountain desert raises my blood pressure.
